7. Administration (Action Item)
7.1. Interviews of Candidates for Burlingame School District Board of Trustees Vacancy (d) 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. (Discussion Item)
Rationale:
Due to the mid-term vacancy of Gregory Land who has been appointed to the San Mateo Union High School District Board of Trustees, the Burlingame Board of Trustees will interview the following candidates who have submitted a letter of intent. The candidates to be interviewed are Michael Jarrett, Joelle Kaufman, Elizabeth Kendall, and Doug Luftman.

Superintendent MacIsaac introduced this item.

President Intrieri stated there are four (4) candidates. The decision will be made tonight.

Doug Luftman was the first candidate. Mr. Luftman is an attorney for approximately 20 years. Prior to Burlingame, he was involved in several volunteer organizations and served as an Education Foundation Board Member. Mr. Luftman has been involved with the Burlingame Parcel Tax. He was also one of the founding members of Franklin's Dad Club. Mr. Luftman feels being a part of the board allows him to give back and make a difference. Mr. Luftman describes himself as collaborative, respectful of others' opinions, and supports the ultimate decisions the board and superintendent have made over the last several years. . Mr. Luftman wants to retain the quality of education in BSD and adapt to common core curriculum. Mr. Luftman feels he has experience living on both coasts and that gives him a wide perspective on education. Mr. Luftman stated he will be able to bring legal experience to the board. Mr. Luftman is very excited about this opportunity. Mr. Luftman has a 4th grader and 7th grader.

Mr. Michael Jarrett was the second candidate. Mr. Jarrett attended Roosevelt Elementary and BIS. Mr. Jarrett's children attend Franklin Elementary. Mr. Jarrett lives near Hoover and facilitated a blog for Hoover Elementary School. Mr. Jarrett's background is in technology and he has a software business here in Burlingame. Mr. Jarrett was involved in many start-ups and has familiarity with boards. Mr. Jarrett was the co-chair of Measure D. Mr. Jarrett has been on the Bond Oversight Committee for 3+ years, Hoover community blog, music & school committee, does the website for BCE, and his wife is the co-chair of BCE read-a-thon and they introduced a new method for tracking minutes so it is all online as well as it is in English and Spanish. Mr. Jarrett stated that we need to continue to be vigilant about safety. The nutrition that we provide our students (both lunch setting and in classroom) is essential. We need to be mindful of our facilities. Mr. Jarrett would like to provide more outreach. Mr. Jarrett is enthused about this opportunity.

Mrs. Joelle Kaufman was the third candidate. Mrs. Kaufman grew up in New Jersey and majored in Organizational Studies (psychology and sociology). Mrs. Kaufman fell into marketing. Mrs. Kaufman loves education, reading about it, studying it, etc. Mrs. Kaufman joined the International Cultures Day committee (coordinated all the entertainment for the program) and loves the diversity in this community. Mrs. Kaufman joined the BIS PTO, volunteered for the Enterprise Youth Class. Mrs. Kaufman has been in BSD for 3 years. Mrs. Kaufman believes that every trustee should support the superintendent and administration staff. You are an advocate for the district needs and what the district is doing. Mrs. Kaufman stated that the board is here to represent the community. Mrs. Kaufman is not passive-aggressive, very tactful, clear and listens to others. Mrs. Kaufman brings perspective, management and marketing expertise, and would be a resource. Mrs. Kaufman has negotiated for a living. Mrs. Kaufman led the project for new teachers center-development and support of teachers. Mrs. Kaufman believes that it is important to support our teachers. Mrs. Kaufman stated there is a rise in anxiety, not just in Burlingame. The schools are in a unique position to help the kids deal with this situation. Mrs. Kaufman is a tech exec and willing to bring her expertise to the district if needed. Mrs. Kaufman wants to ensure the financial stability of the district and be a part of the education strategic plan.

Mrs. Elizabeth Kendall is the fourth candidate. Mrs. Kendall is a research physicist and engineer. Mrs. Kendall has served on committees; radio frequency work shop steering committee, national science foundation proposal review committees, principal investigator incoherent scatter of summer school. Mrs. Kendall is the organizer and lecturer. This committee is international so she has had to work with others. Mrs. Kendall is a part of the Call committee for finding a pastor for the church. Mrs. Kendall wants to be involved in the process of forming school policies, be an active part of the process. Mrs. Kendall has three (3) children. The oldest child is in third grade. Mrs. Kendall has been a room parent, yard duty supervisor, member hub communications with Washington, PTA Council Executive (parliamentarian), and last year she was the chair of the BCE Dance raffle. Communication is big and very important. Mrs. Kendall stated it is very important to talk with those that you have a conflict with. Mrs. Kendall is very organized, a good listener, loyal, responsible, stick to commitments.

7.2. Board Member Provisional Appointee Discussion (d) - 9:00 - 9:30 p.m. (Discussion Item)
Minutes:
President Intrieri stated each board member will select their top two candidates and explain why. The board will then narrow it down from there.

Kay Coskey selected Elizabeth Kendall and Doug Luftman. Mrs. Coskey stated Mrs. Kendall's science background is very important, strong on communication and would be a great addition to the board. Mrs. Coskey stated Mr. Luftman would be a great addition because he is an attorney, is collaborative, precise, and organized.

Davina Drabkin selected Michael Jarrett and Doug Luftman. Mrs. Drabkin stated Mr. Luftman is not afraid of controversial issues, founding of Franklin's Dad Club (he found a need and worked to fill it). Mr. Luftman seemed to understand the role of a board member well. Mr. Luftman talked about his approach to conflict and knew the district's issues. Mr. Luftman reference the cap on our reserve, LCAP, etc. Mrs. Drabkin stated Mr. Jarrett had real-life examples for what he talked about and he had passion. Mr. Jarrett understood how to work with the Burlingame community. Mr. Jarrett shared his feedback which showed he was not afraid to have an opinion and share it.

Florence Wong selected Doug Luftman and Michael Jarrett. Mrs. Wong thinks it is great that Mr. Luftman is an attorney, specialty with high tech and Silicon Valley. Mr. Luftman is involved in parcel taxes and Dad's club, he is a part of all different levels. Mr. Luftman answered the questions directly and didn't need to go on and on. Mr. Luftman appears to be a flexible thinker. Mr. Jarrett has a great background and has been a part of the momentum of our district.

Mark Intrieri selected Michael Jarrett and Doug Luftman. Mr. Jarrett has been very involved in the community in different capacities, very supportive of the Hoover project. He is someone who has the right demeanor to be on the board (same for Mr. Luftman). Mr. Luftman's legal background from a tech industry can help the district. They are both great decision makers. They are informed, they've been involved in the district, knowledgeable about how the district functions.

Public Speakers: Amy Strang stated Mr. Luftman did not mention teachers. Ann Mitchell stated her top two choices were Joelle and Michael, they provided teachers perspectives. Joelle served on a board before. Michael had experience in all his involvements in Burlingame.

The Board of Trustees selected their top choice. All selected Doug Luftman.
